Om Saraswati Vidyalaya

Om SaraswatiVidyalaya, initially a part of Munshiram ki Kothi, is a single-storey load bearing structure. The ground floor is used as a school while the first floor is residential overlooking the courtyard which is its main feature.

Munshiram ki Kothi

Located in the old city of Allahabad, this house today is merely a part of a huge residence of some kind of British aristocrat. It has now been divided into lots of smaller houses, such as this one, which is attached to Om Saraswati Vidyalaya on one side, and is very interesting to study architecturally and spatially since it is used by different families on all three floors, and on the ground floor too, the house is divided by an imaginary line through the centre, used by two families. This is a typical courtyard type of a house, built on a system of arches in brick, and beautifully ornamented stone brackets and slabs resting on steel I sections. Another very interesting feature is the water drains on all sides of the courtyard, which leads into the plinth and finally to the outside.
